Green Living: you can make a difference to the environment. Make some small lifestyle changes to get the ball rolling, encourage others to do the same, and we will be helping the planet as well as ourselves. You can easily put these few simple green living ideas into practice in your home. Green living refers to a type of lifestyle that has the welfare of the Earth and local environment in mind.
As well as reducing the carbon in the atmosphere, which is believed to be contributing to global warming, a green living lifestyle also reduces waste products, the depletion of natural resources and the amount of toxins that are released into the air and water. Save money and become more healthy by implementing these green strategies.
You can make a few changes in your life to help reduce the volumes of carbon in the atmosphere that is choking the planet. Use your car less often, particularly for short distances. Try taking public transport a few days a week or starting a car pool. You could always walk or cycle to your destination. You are working towards better health for yourself and the environment.
The simplest environmentally-friendly measure in your home is to change your incandescent light bulbs for compact fluorescent bulbs, called CFLs. These bulbs will reduce the amount of power you use for lighting and they also last longer. Your power bills will be dramatically reduced when you replace all your incandescent light bulbs; replacing just five will save you about $50? Save power by turning all household appliances off at the wall.
Plants take carbon out of the air and store it in the soil, so eat more fruit and vegetables than meat. Again, you are helping the environment but you are also living a healthier lifestyle. Methane, one of the worst greenhouse gases, is produced in high volumes by cattle. Limit the amount of red meat you eat and have smaller portions, and eat more lean poultry and fish; the planet and your body will thank you.
Remember the 3 Rs of reducing your environmental impact; reduce, recycle, reuse. Reducing your dependence on plastics in the home helps the environment by reducing the toxins that are produced by their manufacture. By taking your own bags to the shops you won’t need to use those ugly plastic ones. Look at ways you can reduce the amount of paper you use in the office and home. Recycling plastics is simply a method of reusing them for a variety of purposes around the home and garden.
Reduce the amount of water you use in the home. Have shorter showers by reducing the time under the water by only 2 minutes and save water. When using water, only turn the faucet a little to prevent wasting water. Collect the rinse water from your washing machine to water your plants. Use blinds to control the inside temperature instead of relying on the air-conditioner; plants do a similar job outside and solar hot water and heating are good alternatives to electricity.
There are many more ways you can help the planet in your daily life. Research other things that you and your family can do to really make a difference to the life of our planet and your own health and well-being. Encourage your children to be involved; they will have lots of great ideas.
